How Do You Set Up a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF)?

Setting up an SMSF involves selecting a unique fund and trustee company name, obtaining a myID and Director ID, making sure your personal details match across government records, and executing the trust deed and trustee company documents before applying for the fund's Australian Business Number (ABN) and Tax File Number (TFN).

What steps are involved in establishing an SMSF?

Before an SMSF can be established, several pieces of personal and administrative groundwork need to be in place:

•  Check your proposed SMSF name and trustee company name

•  Set up a myID and link your myGov account to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO)

•  Confirm your Tax File Number and that it's recorded correctly

•  Obtain a Director Identification Number for each proposed director

•  Make sure your personal details are current with all government departments

Why do government details need to match before you apply?

The ABN application is checked against other government departments. If your name, date of birth or address aren't identical across your identification documents and government records, the application can require manual intervention, which the ATO's service standard allows up to 28 days to resolve.

What documents are required to establish an SMSF with a corporate trustee?

The ABN application is checked against other government departments. If your name, date of birth or address aren't identical across your identification documents and government records, the application can require manual intervention, which the ATO's service standard allows up to 28 days to issue the ABN.

How long does SMSF establishment take?

Once the order forms are submitted, establishment documents are usually produced within a few business days. The ABN application has an ATO service standard of 28 days if verification issues arise, and the fund needs to show as Registered on Super Fund Lookup before it can accept rollovers or employer contributions.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a company as trustee for my SMSF?
SMSFs can have either individual trustees or a corporate trustee. Both structures are legislatively permitted, and a corporate trustee is commonly used for administrative and asset protection reasons.

Does my SMSF name need to be unique?
It isn't a legal requirement, but a name that isn't sufficiently unique can be flagged for manual checking during the ABN application, which may cause delays.

How long does it take to get an SMSF ABN?
The ATO's service standard is 28 days, though it can be faster if all personal details verify correctly against government records on the first attempt.
