How Do You Open a Bank Account for Your SMSF?

Opening an SMSF bank account requires choosing a bank that offers SMSF-specific accounts, providing the fund's certified Trust Deed, ABN and TFN, and identification for each trustee.

Why does an SMSF need its own bank account?

An SMSF must keep its assets and transactions separate from personal or business accounts. A dedicated bank account is used for receiving contributions and rollovers, paying SMSF expenses, receiving investment income, and making benefit payments, and supports the transparency the ATO requires.

What documents are needed to open an SMSF bank account?

Banks typically require a certified copy of the Trust Deed, the SMSF's ABN and TFN and identification for each trustee.

What name should the SMSF bank account be recorded in?

The account needs to be opened in the name of the SMSF, not just the trustee. For a corporate trustee this is recorded as the Trustee Company Name Pty Ltd ATF the SMSF Name, and for individual trustees, as the Individual Trustee Names ATF the SMSF Name.

What happens after the account is opened?

Once the account is open, an initial contribution or rollover is generally deposited to activate the account, and the correct Electronic Service Address (ESA) needs to be provided to employers and any transferring super funds so contribution and rollover data is received via SuperStream.
