How Do You Roll Over Super Into an SMSF?

Rolling money into an SMSF requires the fund to have an active ABN with Registered or Complying status on Super Fund Lookup, a bank account recorded in the correct SMSF name, and SuperStream registration, since super funds are required to verify these details before releasing a rollover.

What does my SMSF need before it can receive a rollover?

The SMSF needs an active ABN, Registered or Complying status on Super Fund Lookup, an SMSF bank account, and SuperStream registration through its reporting software before a rollover can be processed into the fund.

Why does the SMSF Verification Service matter?

Funds rolling money to an SMSF are required to use the SMSF Verification Service, which checks the SMSF's ABN, complying status, Electronic Service Address, member Tax File Numbers, and bank account details against ATO records before releasing funds.

How long does a rollover take?

Once a rollover is initiated, the existing fund is generally required to pay the amount within 3 business days, with the SMSF then required to process the SuperStream data received within 3 business days of the amount landing in its bank account.

What can delay an SMSF rollover?

Rollovers can be delayed where personal details don't match across the SMSF, the ATO and the existing fund, where the SMSF bank account isn't in the correct name, or where the existing fund has its own additional requirements that haven't been met.

Frequently asked questions

How is the SMSF bank account name supposed to appear?

It should be recorded as the Trustee Name as trustee for the SMSF Name, for example "ABC Pty Ltd ATF ABC Super Fund".

What is SuperStream?

SuperStream is the ATO's data and payment standard for processing superannuation contributions and rollovers electronically.

Can insurance be lost when rolling over to an SMSF?

Insurance held with an existing fund typically ceases if the entire balance is rolled out, and it may not always be possible or practical to replace it inside an SMSF.
